The Seventh Telling — Mitchell Chefitz
July 17, 2002
This book (fiction!) is required reading for one of my classes at the NHC Summer Institute. From the back cover:
The Seventh Telling is a journey into the Kabbalah, a spiritual discipline hidden within the folds of Jewish History. Stephanie and Sidney have been studying with Moshe Katan, a kabbalist who shared his learning only when he perceived that a kabbalistic intervention might be necessary to save the life of Rivka, his wife. What happened to Moshe and Rifkah we do not know, only that their house is now being used for extraordinary storytelling, a spiritual discipline to share with those willing to risk examining the very core of their beliefs.
31 July ‘02: I finished the book yesterday, but I’m still carrying it around, rereading passages, telling all my friends.... It’s the first novel I’ve read in a while and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I hope to have the opportunity to meet the author, Mitchell Chefitz. He’s scheduled to teach at the Summer Institute. Psyched.
UPDATE 15 August 02: I had a chance to meet and daven with Mitch at the NHC Summer Institute; the Four Worlds Shabbat morning service was exceptional and transformative.
