« Schools I Have Attended My low Purim biorhythm »

Drumming alone in Central Park

March 12, 2003

After class tonight,
I did the best thing I could have possibly done
for my stagnant brain:

I picked up my doumbek,
which I’d left at a friend’s house over Shabbat,
and walked to the Pinetum in Central Park.

It was cold,
but I could play loud
and did.

I tried to fit a few psalms to
Egyptian rhythms I learned a few weeks ago,
then my hands got cold.

I started playing with the manual settings
on my camera, I managed to get a few interesting
night shots.

Beautifully shot, and thoroughly enjoyable,
is Nowhere in Africa, which I saw on Sunday.

And if you’re in NYC, you really should go hear my friend Elizabeth Harper. She’s playing at the Bowery Ballroom Friday, March 14th 8:30pm with Crooked Fingers! & Mason Jennings.
She’s great.
