Your Application
June 04, 2003
The committee felt it important that you demonstrate an ability to work within the context of a disciplined academic framework before you are ready for what is essentially a graduate level program. [...] We wish you much success in the years to come and hope that you will eventually become a part of the Hebrew College community.
So they don't want me learning at HC. This can't be bad.
A voice inside me all along (let's call it the non-traditional student) asked, "What are you doing applying to school anyhow?" I've been sure all along that the admissions folk, a panel of distinguished scholars and academics, would know far better than me if I'm ready for their courseload. I suspected, and now know, in their eyes, I'm not.
Now I have more decisions to make, but I'm somewhat relieved. I like having decisions to make andfive years in one place did indeed sound a bit challenging.
Two days ago I recognized a new teacher and a new teacher recognized me; a new and intreguing connection.
Also, this means I can go to Burning Man this summer! The questions are fluttering to mind: review my contract at the JCC? Clinical Pastoral Education training at the Healthcare Chaplaincy? Private semicha?
...You know the troubles of my soul
And You have not imprisoned me in the hand of the enemy
[but] stood my feet in a wide [open] place.
— Psalms 31:8-9
Late last night, I learned of, and instated, the tradition of learning a piece of Torah together with a friend upon their departure. This way, when you come across the piece of Torah, you are reminded of the Person, and when you come across the Person you are reacquainted with that piece of the Torah.
We learned that tehillah this morning. I am planted in the field, a wide open place.
Gam zu le'tova —: this too is for the good. I feel this deeply. I'm excited, now, as opposed to slightly apprehensive, about school's demands, schedules, costs.
Perhaps I'll acquire a BA at HC in due time, but I have the sense I will continue to be an autodidact.
Yea! — I can Choose My Own Adventure again. :)
